LT2: CRYPTOSPORIDIUM & GIARDIA and LABORATORY REGULATIONS & REQUIREMENTS FOR PUBLIC WATER SYSTEMS
August 13, 2008 ~ Idaho Falls ~ 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Eastern Idaho Health District
1250 Hollipark Drive (south side of Lincoln)
Idaho Falls, ID
Gary Grammon of Energy Laboratories, Inc., will be teaching the LT2 workshop. Students will learn the scientific characteristics of cryptosporidium and giardia, be able to correctly identify each via photos in three different microscopy techniques outlined in the EPA methods and be able to recite the health effects from ingesting waterbourne protozoan cysts. Additionally, students will review the informational resources available to them to enable them to comply with the LT2 regulations, proper sampling technique and some of the steps of the lab analyses via EPA methods 1622 and 1623.
This class will be taught by Rhyanna Rogers. Rhyanna will demonstrate the services provided by Teton Microbiology Laboratory, and primarily what kinds of testing they do. Rhyanna will also go over the regulations and requirements for public water systems as well as the testing facility in accordance to the EPA and what kinds of health concerns there are in Idaho’s water. There will be discussion of specimen collection, what bottles to use for testing, preservative if needed, and hold times for all tests done. We will also talk about the Chain of Custody forms and their relevance. Rhyanna will display what information is required on the form and who is required to fill out the form. Reporting from the chain of custody form will also be made clear. Rhyanna will talk about what testing is done in house at our facility as well as which tests are performed as outside services. The method of testing as well as turn around time and results will also be mentioned. We will talk about the most common mistakes we see as far as type of bottle, collection of specimens, and in filling out the forms and reports. Rhyanna also wanted to discuss some of our ideas on how to counter the rising costs for materials and testing. We will end with a period for questioning.

Please save the date: Thursday, September 4, 2008!
EPA Region 10 and the EPA Office of Research and Development are
hosting a one-day workshop to address climate change impacts on drinking
water, wastewater and storm water infrastructure. We recognize that
climate change impacts are likely to be significant to these facilities,
and infrastructure is expensive and has a long life span. Many of the
leaders in climate change adaptation are here in the northwest and
Alaska. EPA would like to gather state, local and Tribal leaders,
utility managers, water associations and academics to identify needs and
develop a regional collaborative approach to address this challenge.
The workshop is schedule for Thursday, September 4, 2008 and will run
from 8am to 5pm. The location will be in Seattle.
The proposed agenda is below. As you can see, the workshop will have
sessions presenting information on anticipated regional climate change
impacts, several perspectives of what communities and utilities need to
enable their water infrastructure to prepare for climate change,
existing tools, and existing frameworks. The crux of the day is a
facilitated dialogue to address the question of what a regional
collaborative approach would look like.
7:30 – 8:00 Registration
8:00 – 8:30 Opening -Elin Miller, R10 Regional Administrator,
Joel Scheraga, Global Climate Change Program Director,
EPA Office of Research & Development, plus a regional leader
