Dosing gas chlorine has been the main form of disinfecting water for over 100 years. It is reliable, economical, and easy to operate. However, with chlorine gas comes concerns over public safety, which shouldn’t be ignored. The most common alternative to chlorine gas disinfection is the use of sodium hypochlorite aka bleach. This presentation will focus on comparing “bulk” 12.5% sodium hypochlorite vs. generating hypochlorite on-site at 0.8%. The aim is to provide a high-level technical overview of the electrolytic process, but mostly focus on the application of both technologies for small water treatment plants, well houses, and chlorine booster stations. Design including footprint requirements, chlorine demand capacity, building in redundancy, and safety considerations in operation will be discussed. Other topics to be touched on will be relevant case studies, economic analysis, and safety considerations for each project.
