Storm Drains

Storm Drains

Often the storm drains on city streets flow directly to surface or groundwater sources. Storm drains will either drain through the subsurface and down into the aquifer below, or they will go directly into a canal, river, stream, or lake. Storm drains can also be connected to the sewer system in your city. This water is treated and eventually discharged back to surface water.

Many citizens do not realize where the water entering storm drains ends up. Some people may even think they are waste disposal drains! Help educate your community on the dangers of storm water pollution by marking your storm drains.

Storm drain markers are available for your community to install. This is a great environmental community service idea for your local boy or girl scout troop, or perhaps a senior project. DEQ will can help your community obtain storm drain markers that alert citizens to Dump no waste.
